A year of stewardship: reflecting on the leadership and impact of UPSA’s Vice-Chancellor

Leadership is best measured by policies that leave lasting impact. Over the past year, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, has demonstrated purposeful leadership through reforms, initiatives, and direct engagement that continue to shape the academic and professional culture of the university. One of the most visible changes under his stewardship has been the introduction of a revised professional dress code policy, requiring professional dressing from Monday to Thursday. This policy aligns with UPSA’s identity as a professional university and has helped instill discipline, confidence, and workplace readiness among students. For many students, the policy has encouraged a mindset shift preparing them not only for lectures, but also for life in corporate and professional environments. Academically, the Vice-Chancellor introduced interdisciplinary project work, allowing final-year students from different departments to collaborate on their projects. This initiative promotes teamwork, innovation, and problem-solving across disciplines, reflecting real-world professional settings where collaboration is essential. Students have benefited by gaining broader perspectives, shared expertise, and stronger project outcomes. The Vice-Chancellor has also demonstrated strong commitment to academic development through the announcement of a Young Faculty Lecturers Scholarship. This initiative is aimed at supporting young lecturers to pursue further studies and professional growth.Investing in faculty development, the administration is strengthening teaching quality and ensuring long-term academic excellence for students. Beyond policy and academics, Professor Mawutor’s leadership has extended to values and student well-being. Throughout the year, he actively participated in “Worship with UPSA programmes,” initiatives designed to provide students with space for reflection, moral grounding, and spiritual growth. Members of the university community have often described him as a humble and down-to-earth leader who recognizes the importance of nurturing both academic and personal development. His support for student empowerment has also been evident in media and communication development on campus. Notably, the Vice-Chancellor supported the Voice of UPSA (VOU) in acquiring a dedicated studio. This milestone has enhanced student journalism, provided hands-on training opportunities, and strengthened campus communication through professional media production. Lastly, Professor Kwaku Mensah Mawutor’s leadership over the past year reflects consistency, innovation, and hard work. Through policy reforms, academic innovation, faculty development, student support initiatives, and empowerment of student platforms, his stewardship has delivered tangible benefits to the UPSA community.
