The student housing trap: when rent becomes unaffordable for the average student

For many university students today, admission is no longer the most challenging aspect of their academic journey. The real struggle often begins after gaining acceptance, specifically in securing suitable accommodation. Across campuses in Ghana, escalating hostel prices are silently transforming student housing into an expense many families can scarcely afford. What was once a routine search for a hostel room has now become a stressful ordeal, marked by exorbitant prices, limited availability, and demanding payment terms. Reports indicate that some shared rooms, occupied by four students, are charging as much as GH¢8,000 per person. In other instances, students have recounted paying nearly GH¢10,000 for a two-person room in areas surrounding campuses. Furthermore, data reveals that some hostel facilities have recorded a cumulative increase of approximately 220 percent in accommodation fees over the past four years. Despite these steep costs, students frequently voice complaints about overcrowding, unreliable water supply, inadequate maintenance, and generally uncomfortable living conditions. For many parents and guardians, sustaining these rising expenses is becoming increasingly difficult. Consequently, some students are compelled to live far from campus to find more affordable rent, enduring hours of daily commuting before their lectures even commence. Others are forced to squeeze into cramped shared rooms simply because better options are financially out of reach. Instead of fully concentrating on their academics and personal development, many students now begin each semester burdened by financial pressure and emotional stress directly attributable to accommodation costs. As concerns continue to mount, student leaders and advocacy groups are actively campaigning for stricter regulation of hostel pricing and more robust intervention from authorities. Many firmly believe that student housing should not be treated solely as a commercial enterprise where affordability is entirely overlooked. Education, they argue, should empower young people and open doors to opportunity, not saddle them with constant anxiety over their living situations.
