I still remember the week before classes began for my second year. After the comfort and camaraderie of the first year, I assumed that my friends and I would continue together, sharing lectures, jokes, and late-night study sessions. I had pictured our familiar faces greeting me in the classroom, our conversations picking up exactly where they left off.
Then the class lists were posted, and my heart sank. The reshuffling had separated us. My first-year friends were nowhere to be found, and I was assigned to a class full of strangers. The sudden change felt like losing something precious before the semester had even started. A sense of loneliness settled over me, heavy and real. Some students already had small circles because they lived on campus, while others, like myself, stayed off campus, making it harder to connect. I wondered how I would survive this semester, both academically and emotionally.
The challenge intensified when group projects began. Courses like Public Relations and News Writing and Reporting required collaboration, communication, and trust. Working with people I had never met was intimidating. Early meetings were awkward; ideas clashed, schedules conflicted, and it felt like no one was on the same page. I often went home exhausted, overwhelmed, and doubting whether I would ever feel comfortable in this new class.
Yet, over time, something unexpected happened. As we spent hours working together on PR campaigns, brainstorming stories, conducting interviews, and editing news reports, walls slowly came down. Laughter replaced tension, mistakes became lessons, and strangers transformed into teammates. One evening, after a particularly long discussion, I realized we had not only completed our project but also formed bonds I would never forget.
That first semester of the second year had begun with confusion, loneliness, and fear, but it ended as a period of growth, connection, and unforgettable memories. It taught me that sometimes, the most meaningful experiences are born from unexpected challenges, and that resilience and teamwork can turn hardship into something truly memorable.
