Baffoe Withdraws as Ghana’s Black Stars Coaching Search Faces Early Setback

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have formed a committee to find the next head coach of the Black Stars following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.

The committee was originally announced as a five-member panel chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe, with former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, former international Anthony Baffoe, football administrator Agbesi Dzakpasu and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah also named.

However, Baffoe has since declined the appointment, with reports saying he was not properly consulted before his name was announced. The remaining members are expected to continue the process of identifying, assessing and recommending a suitable candidate for the vacant position.

The committee is expected to submit its recommendation by Friday, 9 October 2026. The search follows Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with defeats by Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia leaving the Black Stars without a point from their opening two matches.
