Judged by my tribe, not my heart

I never imagined that the greatest obstacle to the future I dreamed of would be where I come from. When I met her, I didn't see a tribe. I didn't see a region. I saw a woman I could love with everything I had. She became my peace, my safe place, and the person I wanted to build a home with. We talked about marriage. We talked about our future. We talked about the children we hoped to have one day. Those weren't just random conversations, they were dreams I carried in my heart. I loved her genuinely. Today, everything changed. She looked at me with sadness and told me we should end things. Not because I cheated. Not because I lied. Not because I failed to love her. But because her father said I am a Voltaian. I sat there wondering how the place I was born could suddenly outweigh the content of my heart. How could my ethnicity become more important than my character? How could years of love, trust, loyalty, and dreams be reduced to a stereotype? It hurts in ways I struggle to explain. I've spent countless nights praying for our future, believing that one day I would call her my wife. I pictured us building a family together, supporting each other through life's challenges, growing old side by side. Now those dreams are hanging by a thread because of something I never chose. I didn't choose where I was born. I didn't choose my surname. I didn't choose my tribe. But I chose to love her. I chose to respect her. I chose to remain faithful to her. I chose to see a future with her. Yet somehow, those choices seem to matter less than the identity I was born into. The painful part isn't just the possibility of losing the woman I love. It's knowing that I wasn't given a chance to be judged for the kind of man I am. Instead, I was judged by assumptions attached to people who share my roots. That is a burden no one should have to carry. I still love her. I don't hate her for listening to her father because I understand the difficult position she's in. A child naturally wants the blessing of a parent. I only wish her father had taken the time to know me before deciding who I was. Maybe he would have seen a man who genuinely loves his daughter. Maybe he would have seen someone willing to protect her, provide for her, and stand beside her through every season of life. Maybe he would have realized that love has no tribe. As I write this, my heart is heavy. Not because I regret loving her, but because I know what it feels like to lose someone you never wanted to lose. It's painful when your future is rewritten by people who never read your heart. If our story ends here, I will always remember that I loved with sincerity. I gave my heart without reservation. And if one day someone asks me what separated us, I won't say it was a lack of love. I'll simply say... "We didn't break up because we stopped loving each other. We broke up because sometimes, in our society, where you come from speaks louder than who you are." And perhaps that is one of the saddest love stories of all.
