The countdown to graduation: between excitement and uncertainty

For many final-year university students, graduation is something they have looked forward to for years. However, as the date gets closer, excitement is often accompanied by one major question: What happens after school?

Final-year students are not only focused on completing their courses and preparing for their final examinations. Many are also thinking about finding jobs, gaining experience, and becoming financially independent. For some, the pressure of preparing for life after university begins even before they graduate.

"I am excited about graduating, but I am also worried about what comes next," a final-year student said.

Finding employment can be difficult for fresh graduates, especially when some employers expect applicants to have previous work experience. This has encouraged many students to take internships, volunteer opportunities, and short courses while still in school to improve their chances of securing employment after graduation.

Financial expectations can also add to the pressure. Some students hope to start earning immediately after school so they can support themselves and contribute to their families. The uncertainty of not knowing how long it may take to find a job can, therefore, make the period after graduation stressful.

Social media can make the situation even more challenging. Seeing former classmates and friends announce new jobs, internships, or other achievements online can sometimes make students feel as though they are falling behind, even though everyone has a different path.

Despite these challenges, the final year can also be a period of preparation and self-discovery. Students are learning that their university degree is only one part of what they need to enter the working world. Communication skills, networking, practical experience, and the ability to adapt are becoming equally important.

For final-year students, graduation is, therefore, more than the end of university. It marks the beginning of a new stage where they must apply what they have learned, make important career decisions, and find their place in the working world.

The future may still be uncertain, but for many students, preparing for it has already begun.
