From Poverty to Postgraduate Success: Three Ghanaian Women Defy Odds

Three Ghanaian women who once faced the prospect of dropping out of secondary school because of poverty have achieved a remarkable milestone by earning master's degrees in Education from the University of Cambridge. Fadila Issah, Francisca Arhinful and Jemimah Mensah faced significant financial challenges during their educational journeys. At different points, their dreams of higher education appeared out of reach, but determination, support and access to opportunities helped them overcome those obstacles. For Arhinful, a scholarship from Camfed not only enabled her to continue her education but also connected her with a network of young women from similar backgrounds. Reflecting on the experience, she said, "It really improved my self-esteem and encouraged me to keep going." Issah's journey was equally challenging. After her father was injured, she took on two jobs to remain in school. Her situation changed when a CAMFED teacher-mentor stepped in to cover her school fees, books and clothing. "I felt like I was dreaming. I could stop working and dedicate my time to study," she recalled. Mensah was forced to leave school at the age of 14 to help support her family. Although she hoped to return to the classroom, the path forward was uncertain. "I dreamed of going back, but I didn't know when it would happen," she said. She was eventually able to resume her studies after a free high school opened near her community. Years later, the women have achieved what once appeared impossible—completing postgraduate education and obtaining master's degrees. Their accomplishment not only represents personal success but also highlights the transformative power of education in changing lives and creating opportunities. As the women celebrate this milestone, their achievement stands as a reminder that education remains one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering future generations.
