Ghana seeks IELTS fee waiver for students and professionals in talks with UK

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, recently announced his formal appeal for the exemption of Ghanaian students and professionals from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and its associated fees when they apply to study or work in the United Kingdom. This initiative aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by many Ghanaians pursuing educational and career opportunities abroad. This announcement came during a meeting between Minister Ablakwa and the British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The discussion served as a platform for reviewing the current state of Ghana-UK relations and exploring enhanced cooperation for the year 2026, aligning with President John Mahama’s broader vision for strengthened diplomatic ties. A significant highlight from their meeting was the intention to elevate diplomatic relations into a Strategic Partnership. This partnership is anticipated to address vital sectors including security, trade, job creation, health, education, governance, and constitutional reforms. The discussions were geared towards creating an impactful collaboration that benefits both nations. A key topic of interest for Minister Ablakwa was the welfare of Ghanaian health professionals already working in the UK or those aspiring to do so. He emphasized the necessity of establishing a government-to-government framework that would protect the rights and enhance the working conditions of these health practitioners. In light of these discussions, Ablakwa made a special appeal concerning the IELTS requirements. He argued that English has long been the medium of instruction in Ghana’s education system, thus making the testing requirement somewhat redundant for Ghanaian applicants. He believes that this exemption would help many talented individuals in the country better access opportunities in the UK. If granted, this appeal would significantly decrease the financial and administrative burdens faced by thousands of Ghanaians who seek to further their education or professional careers in the UK each year. This change could lead to an increase in the number of applicants, benefiting both Ghana and the UK through enhanced cultural exchange and economic collaboration. Mr. Ablakwa characterized his engagement with the British High Commissioner as “extremely fruitful.” He highlighted that their discussions not only focused on the exemption from IELTS fees but also extended to strengthening bilateral collaborations across various sectors that align with Ghana’s national development goals.
